From the Fields of Iowa to the Fields of EMEA: How Albaugh Europe SARL Became a Strategic Hub for Innovation, Growth, and Collaboration

In 1979, on a modest farm in Iowa, a seed of Ambition was planted. Dennis Albaugh, a farmer, took a leap of faith by mortgaging his house, buying a used truck, and entering the crop-protection industry with a simple belief: that farmers deserved more choice, better service, and fair value.

What began as one man’s Adventure to help his local community has since become a global story that continues to grow across continents, bringing accessible and dependable crop-protection solutions to growers everywhere.

Adventure: Our Story

Dennis Albaugh understood how hard it was to grow crops, manage risks, and navigate complex crop protection systems. And from that experience, he saw the opportunity to help other farmers grow their crops and their businesses. Being a farmer himself, he was guided by the same weather, soil, and seasons that shape every farmer’s decisions. His Adventure was rooted in empathy: with growers, for growers.

From those beginnings, Albaugh’s core values took shape: entrepreneurship and focus, sustainability and integrity, efficiency and competitiveness, and respect and teamwork. These are still the company’s guiding principles today, more than four decades later.

Ambition: Our Global Rise

Ambition was the fuel that transformed Albaugh from a regional supplier into a global presence in crop protection.

In 1997, Albaugh expanded beyond the United States by acquiring Atanor S.C.A. in Argentina, a milestone that opened doors to Latin America. From there, the company grew rapidly: Mexico in 2003, Brazil in 2005, and Canada by 2011.

With each expansion, Albaugh didn’t just chase growth. It built relationships, invested in local production, and earned the trust of farmers across the newer markets.

In 2016, the Albaugh brand was formally launched worldwide, uniting its operations under a single identity and purpose. Today, Albaugh has twelve (12) manufacturing plants on four (4) continents, 2,600+ employees, and a presence in over 80 countries.

Its mission remains clear: “To create value for our customers by applying our unique efficiencies to provide a broad and sustainable portfolio of high-quality, competitively priced crop-protection products.”

Access: Our Solutions for Growers

For Albaugh, growth has always been about giving farmers Access to quality, to choice, and most importantly, to alternatives that make a difference. As the company expanded into Europe in 2007, it carried this same principle forward. The goal was not to merely enter the market, but to provide European growers with Access to crop-protection solutions tailored to their crops, climates, and challenges.

Albaugh invested in a formulation and logistics facility in Slovenia, enabling efficient distribution across the continent. Product registrations grew, partnerships deepened, and operations became more responsive to local needs.

An important moment in Europe/EMEA came in 2021, when Albaugh announced its agreement to acquire all outstanding shares of Rotam through a merger. The strength of this acquisition lies in its complementarity: Rotam brought a differentiated portfolio with a strong presence in insecticides and fungicides, manufacturing platforms in China, Taiwan, and India, as well as a strong R&D capability. For Albaugh, this meant an enhanced product and manufacturing strength, and an even more global reach, reinforcing EMEA's role as a strategic hub rather than just a satellite operation.

In 2022, another defining milestone came with the acquisition of Industrias Afrasa, a Spanish crop-protection company with more than 350 registered products across 28 countries. The Afrasa portfolio, focused on Mediterranean crops, complemented Albaugh’s broader generic strategy, which meant that the combination of both organizations can better serve growers in the EMEA region with tailored solutions. In addition, the Spanish formulation site added manufacturing and logistics capacity in Europe, which gave Albaugh the “produced in Europe for Europe” agility.

With the integration of Rotam and Afrasa, Albaugh now offers more than 35 active ingredients in Europe alone, solidifying its place as a trusted partner for growers seeking accessible and sustainable solutions.

Ahead: Our Commitment to Innovation

Being a global player in the crop protection industry means constantly moving Ahead: anticipating challenges, improving processes, and innovating to meet the evolving needs of agriculture.

Albaugh’s success in EMEA is driven not only by scale, but by its capacity to innovate locally. Currently, Albaugh EMEA offers 53 herbicide products, 47 insecticide products, 55 fungicide products, and are already offering and developing biosolutions. Each regional team brings expertise in formulation, registration, and market adaptation, allowing the company to respond swiftly and effectively to the needs of growers and distributors.

Whether it’s improving formulations, enhancing product stability, or exploring new active ingredients, Albaugh is always Ahead.

Accountability: Our Commitment to Sustainability

From the beginning, Albaugh has believed that good business and good stewardship go hand in hand. And for us, sustainability is more than a promise, but a responsibility.

As a global company, our values of sustainability and integrity are more important than ever. We understand the importance of providing products that improve crop yields, aligning with long-term sustainability and the company’s Accountability to both farmers and the planet.

In our 2022 Sustainability Report, Albaugh reaffirmed its commitment to responsible manufacturing, safety, and environmental care. The EMEA region, in particular, plays a key role in advancing these initiatives, contributing roughly 20% of global revenue while embedding sustainable practices in every operation.

In the most recent 2024 Sustainability Report, titled “Our Future is Rooted in Action,” the company put its belief into measurable, transparent practice. The report is structured in alignment with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards, and covers quantitative data, regional initiatives, governance, ethics, and employee development. And when Albaugh EMEA and its regional teams align with global frameworks, it ensures that growers, distributors, and employees across Europe benefit from the same rigorous commitment to sustainability and Accountability.

Alternative: Who We Are

Albaugh is Your Alternative.

More than four decades later, Albaugh still stands for what it did on that Iowa farm: being the Alternative that farmers can rely on.

In an industry often dominated by large corporations, Albaugh’s role is unique. It offers growers an Alternative defined not by size, but by purpose: “To create value for our customers by applying our unique efficiencies to provide a broad and sustainable portfolio of high-quality, competitively priced crop-protection products.”

The establishment of Albaugh Europe SARL, based in Lausanne, Switzerland, symbolizes this evolution. And from the fields of Iowa, to the fields of Spain and Slovenia, to the fields of the Middle East and Africa, Albaugh EMEA is no longer just part of a global footprint, but it has since become a strategic hub for innovation, growth, and collaboration.

The Adventure Continues

The story of Albaugh is still being written. It’s the story of an Adventure that became a global movement, of Ambition that built opportunity, of Access that empowered farmers, of staying Ahead through innovation, of Accountability that guides every step, and of the Alternative that defines who we are.

Because while our roots will always be in Iowa, our purpose spans in the fields of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
